I was surprised that Panos decided give up the pay and comfort of being a UH professor to run for Mayor. I've known Panos as several years who served as President of the Hawaii Highway Users Association (HHUA) which works for better road conditions and improved traffic conditions. I am impressed with his computer simulation projects for (1) traffic flow for (1) Kapiolani if the BRT was constructed and (2)Vineyard and Pali Hwy if under passes were constructed.
I've attended neighborhood board meetings in which Panos gave presentations about why his plans for an reversible highway would be cheaper and more effective than the proposed rail system. He was volunteering his time and money but was always confronted and bashed by the paid consultants of Parsons and the City. As president of HHUA Panos pushed the DOT and DTS to spend the money necessary to maintain our roads and bring them up from the current F rating. He wanted committed maintenance programs that would replace the roads badly in need of repavement and keep them in good driving condition. He has pushed for the synchronization of the traffic signals and the use of engineering solutions such as under-passes to alleviate the traffic congestion and bottlenecks caused by, for example, too many automobiles that need to make left turns from Nimitz to Alakea.
He also wants the City and State to monitor the condition of the roads on Oahu and live traffic conditions along the H-1 so an accurate assessment can be made as to the extent of congestion. We need this kind of brave and dedicated public servant interested in improving our daily lives instead of boostering his political career and raising unnecessary taxes and fees. Lawson Teshima
Dear Panos,
My feeling at this moments are spitted. From one side, I am extremely happy that you are taking part in the rase for Major of Honolulu. I can feel from your mail that you are ready and happy to do that. All what is left to me is to join your happiness and wish you very, very successful race and final victory. On the other hand, I feel a bit empty, not to be able to continue contact with you regarding technical, specifically modeling part of our transportation work. Your leadership and support will be very much missed, not only through TRB committee but certainly wider, on your university in particular. Again, I sincerely wish you all success on the world and share your happiness. Goran Nikolic
I am very impressed by your intention to run for this position and admire your courage. I have read some news articles on the internet on the race for Mayor of Honolulu. Your main opponent labels you as a "one issue candidate", however, I think you are very well prepared to tackle this one issue and I am sure that as an engineer in general you have good solutions for other issues as well. Maybe you get the chance to show that engineers are the better politicians. With best personal regards, Gregor Fischer
Be assured I will vote for you come the 'general election". I am very happy that you have stepped forward to run for "Mayor". And I respect you so much for your heart's concern for our situation on the "Rail". I will encourage others to vote for you, and I will use my influence to persuade others who are not sure who to vote for, to vote for you. No apologies is needed. Also, you have already made not only engineers but those who stand up for common sense and truth proud. Thank you again for running for the office of "Mayor". Aloha, Rad
This is great news! I’m really excited for you. Knowing your numerous personal and professional successes to date, I’m sure that this is well within your reach. I also do know that your many qualities would make you a hell of a (different kind of) mayor, one that a lot of other cities will be jealous of once you’re given the opportunity to showcase your skills and do the kind of things that you’re capable of. I’m sure that a lot of us, your friends/colleagues,/acquaintances, are very proud and supportive of your decision and already looking upon you --personally even hoping that, at some point, your experiences could be transplanted to our old home country! Please keep me posted of your campaign and progress; I’d be really delighted and privileged to assist in any and every way possible, if it wasn’t for our such huge geographical separation… Yannis C. Stogios
This is very exciting news!! I have been following this story for some time now. Based on hearing your lectures during transportation classes regarding the rail, and everything I have learned from you. I know that you are the best man for the job. You are extremely intelligent, well educated, a fantastic public speaker, and have a way of explaining complicated subjects in an easy to understand way. Please let me know how I can help you. Good luck! Rebecca (Hanna) Ferguson, Big Island
I hope that you are successful. I believe that you have many fine qualities that will make you a fine mayor, including honesty and integrity. Lyman Jakahi, Big Island
Dear Panos,
Congratulations on your new endeavor into Politics! It is indeed rare for Engineers to run for political office but it's about time. Engineering as a profession is becoming isolated from the social and societal aspects of the real world. I wish you all the best in your campaign and I hope you win! Isabel J. Canete-Medina, Chicago and The Philippines
I send you every good wish for your ambitions and am pleased as you say an Engineer is seeking such high office, it raises the profile of engineering and can only bring kudos. Kind regards, David
Panos,
I wish you much success in your quest. I know that you will provide a high level of competence and honesty to the mayor's office. Walter
Wow!!! I can't tell you how thrilled I am to see this. I am sorry to think that you won't be at UH this Fall (and longer with any luck) but hopefully you can apply your knowledge and charisma to a larger audience and influence Honolulu politics / policy. James Watson
You have definitely the right knowledge and the right vision for the position. GO FOR IT! Gerhard Hamm, Honolulu
I would vote for you to be mayor instead of Mufi !!! Elaia Enriquez, Waianae
I am impressed [awed, almost] that Panos is willing to make real, personal sacrifices over the next several months and run for mayor. I would like to help his campaign in whatever small way I can. Rob Marrone, Makiki
My wife and I will support you and get out the vote for you! Frank and Margarit Lavoie Mufigottago!
I've been observing the rail project for years and you're the only one that makes sense. Thank you for running for mayor….you may be surprised when you win! Jo Ann Choi Pottberg
We have two chances to stop rail: 1) pass the ballot initiative or 2) elect Panos Prevedouros as mayor. Are our taxes not heavy enough already? With rail, they would become intolerable! Mark Terry, Honolulu
When I first met Dr. Prevedouros a little over a year ago, he said something that I will never forget: "Elected officials should not engage in social engineering." It was an incredible statement to hear from such a person as him, because being an engineer, he understood and knew all too well that technology and power could be used to shape and control many things on this planet, but one thing it should never be used to shape or control is the people of a democratic society. Daniel de Gracia II, Waipahu
I am truly thankful that you will be running for mayor and I trust you to speak the truth and listen to your constituents. Julia Allen, Palolo
Please consider me a supporter of your cause. Good luck with your efforts. Michael B. Bass Congratulations on your recent announcement. You're right, light rail is truly a modern debacle for any large city (we rejected a system here in Orange County some years ago). Roy Reynolds, California
Thank you so much for standing up to run for Mayor. We need you! Laura Brown
Should Mufi stay in office, we as taxpayers will still be shelling out $$$$$$ for the continued waste of our natural resource. Elmer Maner
I've been to several presentions given by Panos. Some of his opponents have been so ugly and so personally defamatory, that I had to excuse myself. He kept the discussion on track, remained focused and absorbed abuse that was entirely unjustified. I'll vote for him because he represents values and thoughtfulness and poise. He stands his ground. I haven't contributed to any campaign in two decades, but I will to his. Just let me know how. Jim Gage
You have my vote, sir. Please keep me updated. Dave Tonnes
RUN FOR MAYOR! Edwin F. Fabro
Just read the latest ASCE SmartBrief on your mayoral candidacy and wanted to send you a note of encouragement from a fellow Civil Engineer who would love to see you win, if only for the simple reason that we need more common sense professionals making important decisions on our failing infrastructure. I live and work in north San Diego County, where we recently had a light rail project shoved down our throats, while the region's transportation system inadequacies take a back seat. No surprise that the project ended up costing almost twice what was estimated and the ridership is less than estimated. In other words, it was one more "successful" public transportation project. Good Luck! I will be anxious to hear how it goes. Tory Walker TORY R. WALKER ENGINEERING, INC. Vista, CA 92084
Running for mayor could ONLY be a positive step in helping to ease many of Honolulu's infrastructure woes. Mufi is truly OUT OF CONTROL, and I sense will stop at nothing to get his way. We need to support a thoughtful, knowledgeable and morally committed candidate to break this cycle of political chicanery and utter mismanagement. Cinnie Frith
If you run you can count on my vote. Dave Manet, Downtown
So glad someone is running against Hannemann the dictator. You have our vote! NO RAIL! Pete & Ann Drechsler
At last someone I can get behind, I am willing to help Panos with his run for Mayor. Ray R. Smith
We need more good men and women like you in government! Mahalo nui loa for caring enough to run. Tom & Sharon McAuliffe, Kaneohe
We support your candidacy as Mayor and thank you for deciding to run against Mufi Hannemann. We are a household of 5 registered voters and we will all vote for you in the upcoming election. We are all very excited about your decision to challenge Mr. Hannemann and plan to be advocates for you in a grassroots effort to campaign on your behalf. We will encourage other voters to cast their votes for you in the Election! The Delos Reyes and Hankins families Ewa Beach
Congratulations, we need someone to stand up to Mufi. More power to you! Ken LeVasseur
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE SHY ABOUT SAYING IT IS TIME HONOLULU HAS AN INTELLIGENT MAYOR AS AN INTELLIGENT MAYOR IS NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER. All the very best to you, Michael Anthony Akin
Thank you for running against Mufi, our out-of-control mayor. He has a large war chest and name recognition, but you will have many people who want the best for the community on your side. You come across as open, honest, straightforward, and intelligent. You are the perfect person for this time in history. Best wishes for much success. Jon Matsuo
I voted for Mufi based on his position on government. Do we need it? Can we afford it? Can we maintain it? However, it seems that this is not the case. As it stands, I would do anything to restore rationality to our city government. My support is yours to lose. Show us what you got. Kris Kono
You were superb in handling Mike Schneider the premier paid gun of PB of Americas on Rick Hamada's program. I support your candidacy for mayor, as I believe that you will bring to that office "intellectual honesty", because you have a conscious desire to provide for our beloved state the best solutions not only limited to traffic congestion but for other concerns as well. You have the ability to express your knowledge in a very convincing and easily understood fashion, which automatically removes you from sounding like an "inside the box only" politician. There is also a good chunk of humor in your deliberations as well as a feeling that you are approachable and most importantly "open minded", traits that are rare these days. I believe you will have an excellent shot at unseating this tyrant. And you will not need a slingshot to bring the big, but hollow fellow down. Mike Uechi
Please consider running for mayor for the city of Honolulu. We need you desperately to remove MUFI from his post and replace him with a competent leader such as you with the experience you have.
Mary and Wim Maas
I hear you every week on Rick's show . My belief it is not a rail project but a development project. They say $3 billion, then $3.2 billion then a city councilman said $6 billion. As the late Senator Everett Dirckson said, " a billion here, a billion there, pretty soon were talking about real money". Jim Slavish
Aloha Panos, We support your move to run for Honolulu Mayor. Dave Thompson and Family, Waimanalo
I would definitely support you in the run for mayor! I will be glad to work on your campaign and do anything to make it successful! We need you! You have exactly the background necessary to help fix the problems facing this island; not having a personal political agenda makes you all that more desirable! With great hope for you, Lois Zygowicz
I would definitely like to see someone run against Mufi. It would be a pleasure to see something being done about our traffic, pothole and rail system problems. Not to mention the sewer system nightmare. If you can fix these problems then you have my unconditional support. Wyman Chang, Honolulu
I would definitely vote for you if you ran for Mayor!! Please go for it. We need new leadership and we DON"T NEED RAIL!! Barbara Nakamura
I will put a sign up in my yard for you. Unless, upon further research you are a socialist or communist. LOL Thank You, Carol Gray
Dear Professor Prevedouros,
Please consider the job as Mayor.According to the initial poll, you would win. Most thinking people know rail is a hair-brain idea and am sure you would have the majority of the North Shore behind you. Bob Sellards Kahuku You have my full support in your run for mayor of Honolulu. What a joy it would be to have a mayor concerned with solving the city's problems instead of Mufi, who is only concerned with feeding his enormous ego. Pam Smith
I voted for Hannemann, purely based on his "Do we need it, can we afford it" pledge. At least I thought it was a pledge. On roads, sewer treatment, waste disposal and now rail he has utterly failed me. I can't believe he will run unopposed this year. Based on your writings and interviews on radio, should you choose to run you will have my vote. You may have it even if your don't run, if Hawaii allows write-in votes (probably not?). You may call on me for support if you do run. If not 2008, why not next election? Joe Speroni, Kaimuki
Four years ago I had to throw a blank ballot in for the Mayor's race because I knew back then both Mufi and Duke Bainum were both for rail. Now with the rail debate front and center, we need someone to carry the flag of STOP RAIL NOW all the way to the Mayor's office and occupy it so that rail never starts again. I'll make room for you in the HOTLANE if you run for Mayor. Please do it, you're the last best hope for a better Honolulu. Aloha! Melvin Ah
Ching
I was browsing through the Star Bulletin this morning and came across some criticism regarding your position on "Steel on Steel" in solving congestion. I'll infer that means you are continuing to do good things in your continuing quest for better traffic flow. Keep up the good work. My heart is in Honolulu, but my body can't stand to be there for more than a couple weeks at a time. Best Regards, John Stehman
What a great idea! You have my vote. Jon Matsushige
Panos will be the right person to deal with our infrastructure problems in the years to come. Best wishes! w.f.chen I was a Graduate Student of Dr. Panos Prevedouros's from 1995-2002. During that Time I have become to know Dr. Prevedouros and come to appreciate his skills, expertise and knowledge with the Transportation and Civil Engineering issue's. Studying under Dr. Prevedouros had made me a better individual and helped me succeed in life. His personality qualities of sincerity, honest, fair, wizard with transportation issue's among others will serve the public good of Hawaii. Greg Dehnert CEO Hype Hawaii, inc President, GEKD, INC.
I think this is a GREAT idea. Panos is a first rate person. Dan Dudden
I listen to you on the radio (KHVH) and am very impressed with your knowledge of the many problems with this city and this debacle of a rail system. Although I don't have a great deal of money, you will have my support if you decide to run for office. I can tell a lot of people who will vote for you. Gayle L. Boc
Aloha Panos, You have my full support if you decide to run for mayor, and I hope you decide to run. Daniel Brackins
Panos Prevedouros has the vision that Hawai'i needs to continue being Hawai'i. We don't need to look elsewhere, or outside, for solutions to the problems that plague us. The answers are clear, right in front of us, and can be done now. Getting away from the political noose that is around every single Oahu resident's neck will guarantee that our children will be able to live in and enjoy the Hawai'i that we all grew up with. Change is not the answer, fixing what is broken is. And Panos Prevedouros is the person who can, and will do that for Oahu. Gregg Hutchings Editor and Publisher Model Cars Magazine www.modelcarsmag.com
Mr Panos, I don't know you but I am encouraged by your considering to run for mayor of Honolulu. Give us an option other that the one we currently have. Having lived in hawaii for 20 years I'm afraid that if change does not occur I'm afraid my dream of staying in Hawaii may come to an end. Brad Bransford
PANOS - RESEARCHED SOLUTIONS FOR ALL OUR PEOPLE. I will vote for Professor Dr. Panos Prevedouros. As a small businessman, I am very, very solution minded. Panos Prevedouros has well researched, documented, footnoted, evidence-based, tested, and proven solutions to our traffic congestion. As a businessman, my economic well being will be enhanced when the City and County of Honolulu and the State of Hawai'i cooperate to allow businesses to better serve our people of Hawai'i. Our people and our economy will greatly prosper when businesses (and emergency vehicles) can easily service any place on our island, from any place on our island. Prime examples: 1) Waianae must have the second access bypass road built immediately! Our people are in extreme danger on that part of our island. 2) Our bus riders need elevated Bus Rapid Transit to have easier travel to doctors, family, friends, and fun. Hawai'i needs leaders like Dr. Prevedouros, who understand that in our Hawai'i: All Places Are Important (APAI) Mahalo, Andrew Mertz President, Andy's Pool Service
Panos Prevedouros for Mayor! Andrew Walden
PLEASE run for mayor....please. Mufi must go and you must arrive. It is that simple. Keanu J. Bruner
Dr. Prevedouros,
O'ahu needs someone of your background and love for Hawai'i to represent her and prepare her for a better future. The hardworking Hawai'i man and woman needs an individual who will work tirelessly and selflessly for our family, friends and neighbors and present a better place for our children to inhabit. Your background, immigrating from Greece, is the typical "American dream" story that people like to hear and are inspired by. O'ahu would benefit greatly in having someone, such as yourself, at Honolulu Hale. I know having someone like you is just part of the solution, since we also need better city councilmembers who aren't placating to the union organizations and special interest groups AND we need active citizens who'd actually contribute to making our island a better place to live, work and vacation. But having you as our Mayor would be a great beginning. I seriously hope you will consider making the run for public office. My best wishes and Aloha go out to you and your family. With Aloha, Eric J. Seabury
I will campaign for you. Dan Douglass
Foremost, it is very likely that Honolulu's electorate will face the question of rail transit on the same ballot. Your candidacy would provide a singular avenue for a much wider understanding of the issues involved and of the principles you advocate. Your candidacy could supply the final impetus to defeat rail and pave the way to rational, efficient and affordable transportation solutions for our community. We are also greatly swayed by the argument that a qualified civil engineer is just the person to fill the post. The spendthrift politicians and their grandiose expansion of government have held sway for too long. We believe your analytical approach focusing on the actual problem at hand will find favor with voters after decades of political posturing. It is time to bring good sense back into the equation. Launch this campaign and help build a solid foundation for the future of our island home. Mahalo hou, Mr. & Mrs. Michael G. Palcic (Julia Allen)
I have been in communication with Panagiotis (Dr. Prevedouros) about Honolulu mass transit for over one year now and have read a few of his transit analyses, latest being on the "Stop rail now" website. I support his nomination. Of course there are no ethnic bias. Whoever heard of that in a Honolulu anyway. Cheers, Niko Nicholas P Kalodimos
PANOS' GREAT QUALITIES MAKE FOR A GREAT LEADER "Every solution I’ve ever come across that Panos has produced makes sense, is affordable, and brings great benefit to all of the people of Honolulu. He runs things in an inclusive, collaborative way that brings out the best in others. A mayor with qualities like these can make Honolulu a great city." Peter Kay, Your Computer Minute
PANOS - A CANDIDATE WITH THE PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE WE NEED TO FIX OAHU "Virtually all of our city problems are civil engineering problems. The last Mayor who was an engineer was Johnny Wilson who retired in the mid-1950s and the city's infrastructure has been disintegrating since then. Let's get a non-political engineer like Panos to fix the place." Cliff Slater www.honolulutraffic.com www.cliffslater.com
I would be very happy to see Dr. Prevedouros run for Mayor and bring our citizenry together on the much-needed common ground of truth and integrity. Panos Prevedouros has demonstrated his willingness to be a truth-teller no matter what the cost. And through his talent and expertise as an engineer, he has shown us all how to apply a constructive sustainability-oriented framework to address Honolulu's pressing issues associated with rebuilding infrastructure, new development, and transportation. Best wishes, Nancy Hedlund, Ph.D. Honolulu Resident
I have the highest respect for Dr Prevedorous. He thinks things through and truly seeks the best long term solution for all problems that face us. I think many very fine people who presently would not even think about stepping up would come forward to help Dr. Prevedorous to build a very fine management structure for Honolulu. A very Reagan like process. Reg Panos is a critical thinker. He is not automatically biased to any particular opinion. He analyzes a situation without jumping to conclusions, and is highly realistic and calculating. Our current mayor has probably never considered the fact that our dependence on oil for almost all of our energy on Oahu is going to become a huge problem, especially if a rail system requiring additional gas-fired generation comes online. All our current mayor seems to be primarily concerned with is giving out contracts, while Panos is totally focused on facts and researching the best possible solutions available before coming to any conclusions. He would make a far better mayor than Mufi especially given our INFRASTRUCTURE crises. Matt Lamon
What makes Panos special is his interest in doing the right thing for Honolulu's citizens without any personal reward. His efforts to improve the community and the quality of life on the island have been undertaken without regard for political or monetary influence, which should be the goal for all professional engineers and planners. Martin Stone, Ph.D., AICP
Wow! Wouldn't it be great to have a Mayor whose professional background was of some use to the position? Who better than civil engineer to deal with our burgeoning infrastructure issues? Aloha, Donna L. Ching
I support Dr. Panos Prevedourous for Mayor of Honolulu because of his practical, cost effective solutions to our traffic problems. He is a brilliant, world renowned civil engineering professor, and I think he will bring fresh ideas to our City. Sincerely, Anne Stevens
Panos has the vision and the knowledge to be a great Mayor of Honolulu. We need a person like him to be at the whelms to make decisions that are in the best interests of the people of this County, not for political reasons and not for self-serving purposes. Panos is that kind of a leader. R. Cengiz Ertekin
Dr. Prevedouros is extremely intelligent, energetic, pragmatic in his approach to solving problems, and most importantly, he is honest. He has my vote for Mayor. We need him; we can afford him; and we can maintain him. Aloha, Randy RANDOLPH F. LEONG Attorney at Law
I have known Panos ever since he began on the engineering faculty at the University of Hawaii. I have always admired his knowledge and professionalism. He would be an outstanding candidate for the office Mayor of Honolulu. Owen Miyamoto, P.E., F.ASCE Honolulu Community College
Panos, Greetings from Crete where I am busy with doing geology at something like seven arch.. sites on E. Crete. And loving it. You are running for mayor? Wonderful!!!! Of course you can have my vote, although we are voting by absentee ballot since we'll be in Athens for the fall. Glad you liked the History Channel special - that was the 20th I've been involved in. Cheers, Floyd McCoy
